Text Box: What’s On Your Plate

Divide your plate into three equal parts:
one-third poultry, meat or fish, one-third vegetables and
one-third whole grains or legumes. To lose weight, divide the plate this way: one-half vegetables, one-quarter whole grains or legumes and one-quarter meat or fish.

Lower Your Risk For Cancer

A healthy lifestyle can reduce your risk for cancer by up to 75 percent, according to studies by the American Institute for Cancer Research. Such a lifestyle includes eating the right foods, being physically active, not drinking alcohol to excess and maintaining a healthy body weight.

Are You Cooking With Love?

Have you heard?
Five percent of all American four year olds are obese.

If that doesn’t give parents pause, I don’t know what will.  What I do know is that most parents love their children.  And parents who love their children would not knowingly put their child’s life in danger.  That would mean some parents, do not consider childhood obesity as dangerous.  Even if your child is thin, it  doesn’t mean that they are not suffering the effects of poor nutrition.   More and more children are suffering from hypertension (high blood pressure).  The diabetes rates in children are higher than they've ever been.  Since 2004, prescription rates for children on medications to treat high blood pressure, diabetes, or abnormal cholesterol has increased by 15%.  Childhood obesity is dangerous and bad nutrition is making our kids sick. But it’s so easy to pick up McDonalds on the way home. It’s one more thing you don’t have to do.  A Mac & Cheese meal after a hectic day at work is easy.  The child is happy.  Maybe in our effort to keep our children from complaining, and because we’re tired, we jeopardize the life of the very child we are trying to make happy.  Let’s face it.  It’s easier to give a child what they want than say no and have to deal with an unhappy child of any age. But the choices adults make for children have consequences.  Before wearing seatbelts became law, there was overwhelming evidence to prove that wearing seatbelts saves lives.  That should have been enough for every parent to buckle up their child, yet children continued to die.  We had to enact a  law to protect us from ourselves.   Will our future bring laws to prevent us from destroying our children with food?
JUST SAY NO
When you say no, instead of feeling like you are denying your child, know that you are giving your child an opportunity to reach their greatest potential.  A better chance at not having a disease associated with something that can be controlled by diet.   Changing your families eating habits might be nerve racking at first, but saving your family is worth a little fuss
Cooking with love isn’t hard.  Get a food plan together and get your family involved.  Discover healthy eating.  Let your family know that you love them enough to provide a healthier lifestyle.  I keep big bags of mixed frozen veggies, and sweet potato fries, and mixed green salads, black beans with salsa, and salmon on hand to put together quick and healthy meals.

Children need leaders in their life who are willing to guide them with loving discipline.   Leaders to support their growth into productive independent grown folk.  You’re cooking with love when you create an environment where your seed can grow to it’s maximum potential. Show them by example how to love themselves by giving your body some fresh love and exercise. And because somebody complains about your choice doesn't make your choice wrong.    Just look around the next time you are out shopping, or at the daycare or elementary schoolOne out of five American four year old children are obese.  Remember that and say NO to poor nutrition.
