Text Box: It’s easy to love routine. Routine is a seed of tradition. It was good enough for our parents, it’s what we’ve been trained to do, it’s what people are supposed to do. We can count on routine. You go to school, get a job, get married, buy a house, have kids. Then you get out of bed, drop off the kids to school, go to work, pick up the kids from school, come home, go to bed, get out of bed, drop off the kids to school, go to work…and this is the way we live happily ever after. Routine can become boring, but it’s what we know. There are no surprises with routine. Why change? If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But lately routine has had some challenges. The divorce rate in the United States is around 53 percent; approximately one in three relationships will experience infidelity, Americans are in a poor state of health, and record numbers of home foreclosures threaten our white picket fence. It is because of these challenges with tradition that many people have begun to take a serious look at the potential of change.
On October 30, 1974, heavyweight champion George Forman fought former world champion Muhammad Ali in a bout called “The Rumble in the Jungle”. This fight has since become one of the most famous fights of all time because it resulted in Ali, the underdog, regaining the title against a younger and stronger Foreman. Before the end of the first round Ali realized, that in order to win this fight, that he would have to change his tactics in round two. While there was no guarantee that this new tactic would work, Ali knew his traditional style of speed and technical skills was not working in this bout with Foreman. This change in tactics lead to Foreman being knocked unconscious in the eighth round. Ali knocked out Foreman for the championship at a critical moment in his career, when most people thought he would lose. Is tradition bad? Of course not! …………..Continued above Text Box: In one corner, we have routine, our predictable and trusted friend. Trained by tradition, routines style is cut and dry, and often mechanically performed. Routines common nature is its strength. It’s no surprise that this reining champion is heavily favored to win in the fight with the mysterious underdog called change. But change will bring something different to the fight. Something new that will challenge tradition in a way that makes this one tough bout. Who will win? Tried and true? Or new possibilities and potential?
